Q: How did you get your nickname “Shug”?
A: It actually came about from my sister when we were young. We’re very close in age, and somehow she just started calling me Shug instead of Melissa, and it stuck ever since. My nephews even call me Aunt Sugar sometimes!
Q: What made you decide to join Goodwill Industries of the Valleys?
A: I had been working third shift for a few years at another company and felt it was time for a change. I saw an opportunity at Goodwill online, applied, and within days I was hired as a shipper. It was a quick transition, but I jumped right into it.
Q: How has your career evolved during your time at Goodwill?
A: When I started in October 2018, I saw Goodwill primarily as a place to shop for affordable items. But working here showed me the broader impact of Goodwill’s mission. From working in book shipping to team lead and now as a supervisor for the e-commerce department, I’ve grown alongside the organization because they boosted my self-esteem and mentored me to become a leader. I’ve learned so much about e-commerce, and seen the groundbreaking of Melrose Plaza, and been involved in various aspects that go way beyond just the retail store.
Q: You brought up Melrose Plaza, can you talk more about Goodwill’s impact beyond retail?
A: I go by there every day on the way home. I love looking and see the new sign up, seeing the development of it. And I hear people talking about it all the time. My parents are in their 70s and 80s. My father-in-law, he’s 84. And they know I work at the Goodwill and we talk about the grocery store all the time. Initiatives like Melrose Plaza and other programs we support at Goodwill bring real change to our community. I’ve seen firsthand how these programs help people find meaningful employment and support their families. I’m hoping that the younger people are getting excited about it, too, and are looking forward to going to Melrose Plaza for new jobs and the improvement of their education.
Q: What is a typical day like for you in your current role?
A: My day varies a lot. I handle online orders, work with sorting the clothes, and sometimes help other supervisors with picking and shipping. I’ve pretty much done it all—from e-commerce to logistics. It’s busy but fulfilling. It makes every day a new adventure!
Q: What would you say to someone considering a job at Goodwill Industries of the Valleys?
A: I’d say it’s more than just a job. It’s an opportunity to grow personally and professionally. If you’re willing to work hard and contribute, Goodwill offers chances to advance and make a difference in people’s lives.
Q: How has Goodwill impacted your personal life and your family?
A: It’s become a big part of my life, and I’m all about family! I have nine grandkids, and from young kids to teenagers, they’ve all participated in Goodwill’s Youth programs and been mentored through Goodwill. I get to see every day how Goodwill has touched a lot of people, not just in my family but in the community as well. Many of my friends have started jobs here as well because they see how much I enjoy it. We know we’re all making a difference together.
Q: Any advice for someone starting at Goodwill?
A: Be open to new experiences and challenges. Goodwill has pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way possible. There’s always room to grow here if you’re willing to put in the effort.
Q: What motivates you to come to work every day?
A: Knowing that what I do matters. Whether it’s fulfilling orders or mentoring someone, I see the impact Goodwill has on people’s lives, and that keeps me going. It’s been everything I didn’t know I needed. From shopping here as a customer to being a part of its mission, Goodwill has been fulfilling in ways I never imagined.
