Goodwill Industries of the Valleys

More to Our Store-y: Daniel Breen, Baler

Daniel Breen’s journey in his own words from living on the streets to obtaining stability and independence with his job at Goodwill Industries of the Valleys.

Q: How did you start working at Goodwill, and how has your journey been since joining the organization in 2017?

A: I began working at Goodwill thanks to an opportunity from the Rescue Mission of Roanoke, where I was staying at the time. I enjoyed the job and was eventually hired full time. Since then, my life has changed dramatically. I’ve moved from homelessness to having my own apartment, which is a big achievement for me. I have my own place to call home, and I’m very thankful for that. It’s been a big eye-opening experience for me because I was in a really big rut at first. But everything got way better as time went on.

Q: What’s your role at Goodwill Industries of the Valleys?

A: As a baler, I primarily handle the baling and processing of clothing and other products that come back from the outlet store. The baling machine compresses it and I make bales from that. Anywhere between 800- to 900-pound bales. Depending on how much product needs to be baled, I’ll make anywhere from about five to seven bales a day. It’s physically demanding but really rewarding. I’m happy that I have a big purpose and make a difference here to support my team at the store. I also help out with inventory for the store.

Q: How has Goodwill helped you develop professionally and personally over the years?

A: Goodwill has taught me valuable skills like time management and prioritization. It has also given me opportunities to take on more responsibilities, such as managing inventory and helping overall operations run smoothly at my store. I’ve been able to make the same changes and improvements in my personal life, too. I’ve learned to take things one day at a time. Goodwill has been a stable and supportive environment, and I consider the people I work with as friends and family.

Q: What advice would you give to others looking to join Goodwill or similar organizations?

A: Understand that people are genuinely there to support you. If you’re willing to work hard and commit, there’s a place for you to grow and succeed. The independence and stability it has provided me are things I will always be grateful for. I never thought I’d come this far, but here I am, more independent than ever before.
