Oliver Blaney’s journey with Goodwill Industries of the Valleys showcases his growth from a part-time processor to a seasoned manager, and his passion for our mission.

Q: When did you start your career with Goodwill Industries of the Valleys?

A: I started with Goodwill back in 2014 as a part-time processor at the Orange Avenue location here in Roanoke. Initially, I saw Goodwill as just a thrift store, but as I got more involved, I learned about all the community programs and the mission it supports. Over the years, I’ve moved up from part-time roles to becoming a store manager, starting with assistant manager at Hunting Hills, then managing various other locations like Orange Avenue, Salem, and now West Salem. It’s been a journey of growth and learning many different aspects of the business.

Q: What has motivated you to stay with Goodwill for over 13 years?

A: Honestly, it’s the impact we have on the community that keeps me here. Knowing that my work helps fund programs that support people in need is very fulfilling. Plus, Goodwill offers a supportive environment and opportunities for advancement, which have allowed me to advance my career.

Q: How has Goodwill supported your professional growth and development?

A: Goodwill has been instrumental in my growth. My supervisors and senior leadership saw potential in me and encouraged me to take on new roles. They provided training and tools to enhance my leadership skills, which have been crucial as I moved into management positions.

Q: How has your personal life evolved alongside your career at Goodwill?

A: When I started at Goodwill, I was in my early twenties and still living at home. Now, I’m a homeowner, a husband, and a father of three energetic kids. Goodwill has not only supported my professional growth but also helped me build a stable life for my family.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a career at Goodwill?

A: Be open to growth and change. Goodwill offers opportunities for those willing to learn and take on new challenges. It’s not just a job; it can be a fulfilling career where you can make a difference in your community. Every job has its ups and downs, but overall, it’s been an incredibly positive experience. It’s a place where you can grow professionally, contribute to meaningful work, and feel valued as part of a team.
